The Project…

While working on the POS applications for Mercedes-Benz over a few months, I realised we were restricted by existing brief guidelines that were dated which in return made the applications look and feel dated with a poor user experience behind it all. I took it upon myself along with another designer to refresh the visual language on the 22″ touch screen POS modernising the style, making it more flexible/dynamic and improving the

Reviewing The Current System

The initial stage of this project consisted of reviewing the entire POS system from its menu down to its core applications. We used data captured from the analytics team to get an idea of how these applications were being used and we pin pointed what was not working well and what was.

We also went into pop up stores and dealers to visually observe users behaviors whilst navigating through the POS system, which proved really helpful when trying to understand some key shifts in the data.

Testing Prototypes

From the review we gathered plus the analytics data, we set out on creating prototypes based on our recommendations so that we could test with real users, to back up points from the review.

We used Balsamiq and Invision to create rapid prototypes of key applications to test out new ways of interacting with content on the platform such as shifting navigation points, content direction flows etc… We found many flaws across applications that were addressed and taken into consideration during the redesign stage.

Applying The Language To Function

Once we had the foundations set, we were set the task of applying the changes to various applications on the POS system, this included a new menu which did a better job presenting the ever growing application library whilst drawing people over to the touch table with big features. Other applications included the after sales video hub and the cabriolet visualiser.



“Take-Away” Mobile App

Looking at the user research we gathered from observing how users actually use the POS systems, we spotted that a percentage of users were time short as they were just passing by a pop up store but have to sacrifice exploring the content due to time restrictions.

I came up with a solution to offer a stripped-down version of the POS system in the form of an iOS and Android app. This app could be easily downloaded by scanning a QR code on the interactive screen allowing the user to continue about their day while still exploring and engaging with our content.

  • Incorporate added features available on mobile devices

What was achieved…

The project was received very well by our clients at Mercedes-Benz UK and were impressed with our effort to constantly improve existing platforms. From these changes, the client has insisted they want all the future and past applications to feel similar and fit into this visual language.

The project not only was for the client but was used as a design framework for the YFS design team to base their projects on, allowing them to effectively start designing with templates set up in sketch using the grid, colour pallet, navigation etc…
